7 bizarre, hilarious, and wonderfully weird harry potter fan creations

Now that a considerable amount of the Harry Potter fanbase has essentially disowned J.K Rowling on the premise of her being a raging TERF, where do you turn when you want Potter content but don’t want to support her? Thankfully, the franchise is so big that fans (and even critics) have created their own wonderfully weird Harry Potter fan creations over the years. From what’s been branded as the worst fanfiction of all time, to a Christian retelling of Harry’s tale, here are 7 bizarre, hilarious, and wonderfully weird Harry Potter fan creations.

My immortal

If you haven’t heard of my immoral, enjoy your last few moments of bliss before youre thrown into what is arguably the worst fan fic of all time. Although named after an Evanescence song and riddled with My Chemical Romance references, My Immortal is at its core, a Harry Potter fic.

My Immortal is about vampire witch (and “goffick” pop cultural icon) Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way as she lives out her days turning the golden trio goth, getting caught in a love triangle with Draco and… Vampire which is what she’s nicknamed Harry, and saving the world from Voldemort and “Da Death Deelers”. While this might sound like an emo version of any Harry Potter fan fic, be warned, My Immortal is a special kind of fic. My Immortal is so poorly written than linguists have actually questioned if the author was just that bad of a writer or a troll.

The identity of the author is still up for debate, and in 2017 a fraud almost got a memoir published about the fic only for it to turn out thay she was lying. Personally, I always thought YouTube’s emo icons Raven Acid Bath Princess of the Darkness and Tara wrote it, since they have the same names as the My Immortal writer, like the same bands, and also call people preps.

My Immortal Webseries

Youtube is full of dramatic readings of My Immortal but the adaptation of the fic that reigns supreme is the My Immortal web series.

The webseries had to take on a life of it’s own and not recreate the fic word for word, and who could blame them? No one wants to see Enoby lose her “virlility” to Draco in the Forbiddin Forest, or see “Snap and Loopin misticating” to Eboby in the bathtub.

A Very Potter Musical

A Very Potter Musical is a fan musical by Matt Lang, and composed by Darren Criss (yes, Blaine from Glee) and A.J Holmes. Tje first performance was in 2009 and became a Harry Potter fan creation cult classic.

A Very Potter Musical largely draws on the Goblet of Fire for inspiration, but is very much an original story. The absolute star of the show is the overly dramatic Draco who likes to remind everyone that his father will be sending him to Pigfarts next year, which is on Mars.

Hogwarts school of prayers and miracles

Every Potterhead remembers that time the Vatican denounced the series for promoting witchcraft (yes that really happened if you don’t remember that). So what do you do if you dont want your kids influenced by a book purported to be about satanism? You write your own version. Hogwarts School of Prayers and Miracles is about Harry being saved from his atheist aunt and uncle and going to Hogwarts to be a Christian.

So basically, this is the opposite of My Immortal.

Puppet Pals

Snape, Snape, Severus Snape, Snape Snape, Severus Snape…

Harry Potter Puppet Pales was a web series on Youtube which was a parody of the series. It originally came out in 2003 an as animated seires, and then was relanched on Youtube in 2006 as the puppet’s we know and love.

When I was in school all it took was one person to start with “Snape, Snape, Severus Snape…” for us to start reciting the Mysterious Ticking Noise.

Leaky Con

Leaky Con is an unofficial Harry Potter convention run by Mischief Managment, who also run Cons for Game of Thrones and Broadway. Leaky Con was originally a fan chat on The Leaky Cauldron but is now a real life convention.

Given that J.K Rowling has well and truly out terfed herself, many Harry Potter fans (including myself) no longer like the idea of doing Harry Potter things that support her, which includes some of the things on this London-centric Harry Potter bucket list. With Leaky Con being independent of both her and Warner Brothers, Potterheads can attend this knowing they’re not directly benefiting someone who has ruined her legacy by outing herself as a transphobic bigot.

Muggle Quidditch

Muggle Quiddich is another wonderful Harry Potter fan creation. Unfortunately, as Muggles we can’t play Quiddich like in the books, but Potterheads did their best to recreate it.

Muggle Quiddich works a lot like regular Quiddich. Two teams play against each other to try score the most points. Catching the Snitch still ends the game and totals 150 points, except in this case the Golden Snitch is literally a person running around the field dressed up.

A note on the Death of an Author

No, J.K Rowling didn’t die, but she sure is dead to most of us now. Death of the Author refers to a literary theory where once the author puts the work out; its not theirs anymore. Harry Potter should have been ours to interpret once it was out, but she constantly had an invasive authorship by bringing up things she never wrote in the book as fact. For example, Dumbledore being gay but not actually making it officially canon in Crimes of Grindlewald, or the fact that the whole of Cursed Child reads like fan-fiction.

Harry Potter fans have had the most beautiful interpretations, like viewing Harry as a brown bi man or the Trans Snape Fandom. While J.K Rowling has been accepting of fan-fiction unlike other authors like Anne Rice, she doesn’t seem to appreciate fan headcanons. I always wondered why Miss “Did you know *insert character* was really *insert minority here* all along” never took credit for bi Harry or trans Snape, now we know. She didn’t take credit for trans Snape because she’s transphobic.

Queer kids grew up feeling they would be welcome at Hogwarts. So many trans kids saw themselves in the Mirror of Erised.

I’m especially grateful for these wonderfully weird Harry Potter fan creations now more than ever. I don’t know who I am without Harry Potter. I was 5 when the first movie came out so I don’t remember my life without it. Being a Gryffindor is fundamentally who I am. I pity people who wrong me because they’re lacking love, just like Harry told Voldemort, and I stand up for what’s right because that’s what Hermoine did. It’s a painful irony that J.K Rowling taught us to stand up for what’s right, and not what’s easy and that’s what we’re doing now as we stand up against her.

Daniel Radcliffe worded it perfectly for the Trevor Project:

“If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.”

Hogwarts will always be there to welcome us home because it’s belonged to us the second the books came out. So thank you fellow Potterheads for these bizarre, hilarious, and wonderfully weird harry potter fan creations (except maybe Hogwarts School of Prayer, which is probably just as transphobic as J.K Rowling). Hogwarts is OUR home.

  1. Love this post! Actually got a little teary eyed towards the end when I read Daniel’s message again and how Hogwarts will also be there to welcome us home. I’ve been feeling a bit sad about JK’s comments and this cheered me up. I’ve heard of Leaky Con before but not had the chance to go, yet, but I loved the Harry Potter puppet pals! So very funny.

    1. I felt like turning my back on the Wizarding World in general until Daniel (and Eddie) spoke up. I’ll always love Harry Potter, but I think I just won’t buy Harry Potter stuff anymore so she doesn’t benefit
